Beginning in 2007 in the small coastal town of Tumbes, Peru, Planeta Oceano has been developing research, teaching environmental education, and spreading awareness of environmental issues for nearly two decades. Our primary research focuses on helping endangered giant manta rays in northern Peru. There, we work with local coastal communities to increase their participation in marine research and increase environmental leadership. By doing so, we hope to reduce manta bycatch and reactivate community-based ecotourism.
We also work to transform the nation’s education system to inform youth on the importance of marine issues and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.

Planeta Océano is committed to the conservation and restoration of coastal and marine environments in Peru through multidisciplinary research, awareness, and sustainable development initiatives, engaging local communities and promoting their participation, while encouraging stakeholder participation.
Planeta Océano seeks to be a reference that promotes a positive change in the way of thinking and managing coastal and marine environments. Planeta Océano aims to generate these changes in different communities throughout Peru and the world while contributing to a healthy coastal and marine environment that benefits the lives of the people.
