Coastal communities directly depend on marine environments for their survival, yet inadequate human practices often expose them to degradation. We know there is great economic opportunity in the marine conservation sector, and together with local communities, we promote environmentally-friendly economic drivers, such as ecotourism.
We’ve also worked with fishermen and leadership in coastal communities to engage in sustainable fishing practices, such as reporting bycatch and engaging in community-driven ecotourism.
People protect what they know, so we see education as the greatest way forward to empower the next generation of changemakers.
Our vision is to transform education in the country through various efforts that promote the strengthening of teaching capacities, student knowledge, and the involvement of local communities in marine conservation.
We train artisanal fishermen in business, tourism, safety, and first aid so that they can provide the service of swimming with manta rays. We also seek to provide or improve fishing boats, send our team members for pilot training and raise awareness of manta ray conservation along with other species. This knowledge can then be shared with the tourists on their trips. This way, the impact is multiplied, and an economic alternative is generated for fishermen.
